Obento culture is quite unique here. Husbands who are financially controlled by the wife usually brings bento to work. That's because they won't have money to spend on lunches. There are fierce competitions among mothers of preschoolers in preparing their children's bentos to bring to the kindergartens. Here's just one example of a preschooler's bento.
In my case, we chose to follow what our faith dictates. And that made it hard for us to let our girl eat meals prepared in school or better known as kyu-shoku. So I end up having to wake up early every weekday morning to prepare her bento, and I normally follow the school's kyu-shoku menu. I have to say it's a gruesome task for someone who either dined out or took away foods from outside restaurants, almost every day for the past 10 years since we got married. But I think I am enjoying my newfound skill ( if you could ever call it that.. hahaha) of preparing Japanese bento! But be warned. Mine aren't kyara-ben or character obento. They are just plain old Japanese school meal, packed in plasticwares. But i have never put this much effort in preparing meals before and I want to keep a record on the miracles (they are miracles to me ok!) I am making.
I have been posting it on facebook before but if you read my previous post, you know now that my facebook need pest control.. Hence, I am moving all my previous posts from facebook to here. And will add new ones too. I doubt anyone would be reading this on regular basis... Majority of you guys stumbled upon this while searching for something else, right? But I seriously need time to do this. Hope to do it before this short stint in Nishi-Ojima finishes.
